SpamAssassin How-To

In order to help you in the war against SPAM, HostedPro provides you SpamAssassin. SpamAssassin works on a scoring system. If an email is scored high enough it is suspected as SPAM and is labled in the subject of the email. This makes it easy to identify and create rules to move it to a junk email folder. Your email still comes to you, and in the case that SpamAssassin labels a wanted email as SPAM, you can retreive it.

It is required to enable and configure SpamAssassin so it works on your domain, it it easier than you might think. Below is a step by step how-to designed to help make the setup of SpamAssassin as smooth as possible.

1. Access your cPanel and click on "Email". If you are not sure how to access your cPanel (control panel) click here.

2. Click "Spam Assassin"

3. Click "Enable Spam Assassin"

4. Click "Go Back"

5. Click "Configure SpamAssassin (required to rewrite subjects")

6. You'll see a screen like this. There a lot of options here, but we'll just deal with 1 or 2 in this tutorial

7. First, enter **SPAM** into the "rewrite_header_subject". This will prepend the subject of suspected SPAM with **SPAM** (**SPAM** could be anything, we'll use this for this demonstration). This will prepend the subject of your suspected SPAM with **SPAM**, e.g.: "**SPAM**Order Your Prescriptions Here".

UsingThe default value of "5" in the required_score should be fine to start with. After using SpamAssassin for a little while you may want to either raise or lower that score. The note below may help with that.
NOTE: In addition to the step above, you can also show the score SpamAssassin assigned to your suspected SPAM so you can more easily judge what your "required_score" should be. Using (_HITS_) as demonstrated below. This will make the subject of suspected SPAM look like "**SPAM**(11.2). If too much SPAM is leaking through you can lower the required_score to try to catch them. If wanted email are getting labeled, raise the score to allow those to come through.

8. When you are done just click "Save"

Now that you have enabled and configured SpamAssassin you will start seeing a difference in your email. If you don't setup rules in your email program, you will see emails prepended with **SPAM**. Setting up rules is another topic, but it isn't difficult & easily found how-to's are found within your help files or online, Eventually we will post as many "rules" as we can.
